Enjoy life and achieve things at Millgreen School

Parents

At Mill Green School we have a very effective Family Liaison Co-ordinator. Her name is Adele Beresford-Smith and she is contactable through the school office.

Her role is to work with both children and their families and provide support and help where needed. She liaises with lots of different agencies on behalf of parents and provides support if parents have any concerns or issues. If any of the children / young people have any worries then she can support them as well.

Parent Support Group

The Parent Support Group generally meets once a term, providing a great opportunity for parents, carers and families to get together, relax over a cup of tea and a biscuit and just have a chat, or maybe share an experience or ask for some advice. It is often very reassuring to hear that somebody has ´been there, done that!´

We regularly arrange for people to come along to give talks on subjects which may be of interest to us. The Parent Support Group offers it all!

Some of the topics we have covered in the past include:

  • Local Support Networks and Resources
  • Communication
  • Speech & Language - Makaton and PECS
  • Autism and ADHD
  • Disability Living Allowance and Benefits
  • Writing a Will
  • Developing Reading

Some topics we will be covering this year are:

  • PSHE - Including Sex and Relationships Education
  • Aromatherapy

Please look out for the flyers and come and join us!

The Parent Support Group offers parents, carers and families the opportunity to learn more about the curriculum at Mill Green and how they can support their children to progress.

Curriculum Details

Mill Green aims to provide a broad, balanced, diverse and differentiated curriculum which is challenging, creative and fun. We aim to facilitate learner´s acquisition of knowledge, skills and qualities which will help them to develop intellectually, emotionally, socially, physically, morally and aesthetically, so that they may become independent, responsible, thinking, confident and considerate members of the community.

Mill Green´s curriculum is underpinned by the national frameworks to ensure that every learner has the opportunity to develop the key learning steps defined within that documentation. However, we have developed a more expansive approach to its delivery that ensures that our learners receive experiences and opportunities to develop their knowledge, skills and attributes in ways that will guarantee teaching and learning is relevant.

Key Stage 2, 3 and ASD

In key stages 2, 3 and the ASD classroom, learners access daily literacy and maths lessons. Lessons are delivered imaginatively with a focus on multi-sensory teaching and learning strategies (Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic), and reflect learners´ changing needs as they mature. The curriculum is differentiated to meet the specific needs of each learner. The foundation subjects are delivered through a thematic curriculum where planned activities are linked to an overarching theme each half term. Examples of themes include Vikings, Rainforest, Eco-Warriors and Money Matters. Over the three terms of the academic year, each learner has the opportunity to experience the full range of National Curriculum subjects. Mill Green also offers specialist timetabled sensory provision for learners with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) and a specialist classroom for learners with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD), where highly trained staff deliver a structured curriculum which incorporates the TEACCH approach.

Key Stage 4 and College

The key stage 4 and college curriculum offers extensive provision through three ability ´pathways´. These pathways include access to accredited courses and qualifications, work related learning, F.E. links and an extensive life skills programme which includes an independent travelling skills project with an identified member of staff. Learners with PMLD also have access to a personalised sensory curriculum centred on basic life skills and the development of individual levels of independence. All learners are encouraged to be young adults, learning and practising the key skills needed in everyday life, the world of work and further education. Learners gain accreditation for their work (e.g. ASDAN, AQA, Entry Level) and benefit from vocational experience as well as careers advice and guidance. Work related learning and enterprise activities at key stage 4 and in the college are an integral part of the post 16 curriculum. This strong work related dimension ensures that learners have opportunities to develop their self-confidence and skills to achieve their future economic well being. The curriculum is enriched by the delivery of awards schemes such as the Duke of Edinburgh programme for all learners in key stage 4 and post 16.

The curriculum at Mill Green School and College is enhanced through educational visits, field trips and residential trips. All classes have the opportunity to go on at least one outing each half term to complement an area of the curriculum and full use is made of local facilities such as museums, art galleries, theatres, historical sites and sites of scientific interest. Good use is made of the local community and people are regularly invited into school to support various projects. The curriculum is also enriched by the provision of planned theme weeks once a term. Recent examples of such weeks are multi-cultural week, health and fitness week, enterprise week and Every Child Matters week. In addition to this, further enrichment opportunities occur throughout the year such as green day, church services once a term and whole school events such as sports day, bonfire afternoon and a whole school picnic. Extra curricular activities are offered throughout the year such as ICT club, multi-skills club and health and beauty club.
